Best Domain Extensions for Startups in 2026
Last updated: 12 October 2026
The short version. .com remains the safe default. .io, .ai, .app and .dev are accepted primary domains in their niches. .co and .me are reasonable fallbacks. .xyz is the standard for Web3. Country codes are right for local businesses. Everything else is a redirect at best.
The general-purpose extensions
- .com — what people type by default. Hardest to get, most valuable to own. If a coined name has its .com free, that is the strongest signal you will get.
- .co — short, accepted in the Americas, often free where .com is not. Its weakness is typo traffic leaking to the .com owner. We mark .co availability as "likely" because its registry has no public RDAP service; confirm at the registrar.
- .net / .org — .org for nonprofits and open-source projects, where it signals mission. .net has no clear meaning any more and is best avoided for a new brand.
The tech extensions
- .io — the developer and B2B standard. Well understood by technical buyers, higher renewal than .com. Definitive availability check via the registry's RDAP.
- .ai — category signal for AI products, now crowded and expensive. Best when the exact brand name is free.
- .app — HTTPS-only, clear meaning, good availability. The natural choice for consumer apps and single-purpose tools.
- .dev — HTTPS-only, clearly technical, less crowded than .io. A strong primary domain for developer tools and open-source projects.
- .xyz — adopted by Web3 and some design brands. Cheap and widely available; outside those communities it still looks unfamiliar.
Personal and niche
- .me — personal sites, portfolios, creators. Good availability, friendly tone, rarely right for a company.
- .store, .shop, .agency, .studio — descriptive and usually available, but customers do not type them. Use them for campaigns or redirects, not as the main domain.
Country codes
For a business that serves one country, the local extension (.de, .ro, .fr, .co.uk) is often the best choice: it ranks locally, costs little and is trusted by local customers. .eu suits companies selling across Europe. Our checker queries the .de and .eu registries directly; .ro is checked via DNS only, so treat "likely available" as a prompt to confirm at a Romanian registrar.
Pitfalls
- Hyphens. They are typed wrong and look dated. A different name beats a hyphenated .com.
- Premium pricing. "Available" at the registry can still mean a premium price at the registrar, especially on .ai, .io and .co. Always confirm at checkout.
- Renewal shock. Some extensions renew at several times the registration price. Check the renewal before you brand everything.
- Extensions your audience has never seen. If a buyer has to ask whether the link is real, you have lost them.
Compare extensions on a real name: every card in the generator shows your chosen extensions side by side, and "All extensions" checks the full list.
