AI startup — Naming notes

What makes a good ai startup name

Every second AI company is called Something-AI or Some-mind, and the .ai registry has become the most crowded extension of the decade. If you want to stand out in a launch tweet or a YC batch list, you need a name that does not lean on the suffix. This page tunes the generator towards coined words with a technical, precise feel, and checks the .ai registry directly so an "available" badge means the registry really has no record of the domain.

Describe what the model or agent actually does for the user, not the architecture. "Drafts support replies and escalates tricky tickets" gives the AI better material than "LLM-powered customer platform".

Tips that save a rename

  • Drop the "AI" from the name itself; use it in the tagline. Names age badly when the technology becomes the default.
  • .ai domains renew at a higher price than .com; budget for it and still try to get the matching .com.
  • Avoid names that are one letter away from an existing AI lab or model (Claude, Gemini, Mistral, Llama).
  • Check Hugging Face and GitHub for projects with the same name; developers will find them first.
Is a .ai domain worth it for an AI startup?

Yes if you can get the exact brand name. It signals the category instantly. Pair it with .com if possible, since enterprise buyers still default to typing .com.

How accurate is the .ai availability check?

We query the .ai registry's RDAP service directly after a DNS check. "Available" means no registration record exists; premium pricing may still apply at the registrar.

Should the name hint at AI at all?

A subtle hint (precision, intelligence, speed) is fine. A literal one ("GPT", "Bot", "Mind") is already crowded and may clash with trademarks.

03 — FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about our domain name generator.

Is NamePulsar free?

Yes. Generating names, scoring them and checking availability is free and needs no account. When you register a domain, you do it directly with the registrar.

How accurate is the availability check?

We query DNS and the official RDAP registry data in real time. “Available” means the registry has no record of the domain. “Likely available” means the domain has no DNS records but that registry doesn't offer RDAP to confirm. Premium or reserved names can still cost more at the registrar, so always confirm at checkout.

What is the Pulse score?

A 1–10 brandability estimate based on length, pronounceability, syllable count and spelling pitfalls (digits, awkward consonant clusters, double letters). It helps you compare names; it says nothing about trademarks, so run a trademark search before you commit.

Which domain extensions are supported?

.com, .io, .ai, .co, .app, .dev, .net, .org, .xyz, .me, .eu, .de and .ro. Choose the ones you care about before you generate, or hit “all extensions” on any card.

Do you store my project description or shortlist?

No. Your description is sent to the AI model to generate names and isn't saved by NamePulsar. Your shortlist lives only in your browser; share links simply carry the names in the URL.

What makes a good brandable domain name?

Short (ideally under 10 characters), easy to spell after hearing it once, easy to pronounce, distinctive enough to trademark, and available as a .com or a strong alternative like .io or .ai.
