Game studio — Naming notes

What makes a good game studio name

A studio name appears on a splash screen, a Steam page and a convention badge, and it has to outlive the first game. Indie studios that became brands (Supergiant, Thunder Lotus, Mobius Digital, Thekla) have names with personality that do not describe a genre. Game titles are a separate problem: Steam search is literal, so a title nobody else uses is worth more than a clever one. This page leans on playful coinages and compounds, and checks the .com, .io and .dev domains that studios typically use.

Describe the kind of games, the art style and the team. The art style ("cosy, hand-drawn, small-town life") is what gives the names personality instead of generic gaming vocabulary.

Tips that save a rename

  • Search Steam, itch.io and the Nintendo eShop for the name before you register anything; store search is exact and duplicates bury you.
  • Avoid "Games", "Studios" and "Interactive" in the domain; add them to the legal name if you must.
  • Check Twitch and YouTube for channels with the same name; streamers will tag you by handle.
  • Make sure the name is pronounceable in English even if the studio is not English-speaking; press coverage depends on it.
Should a game studio name reflect the genre?

No. Studios change genres; a name tied to "pixel" or "horror" ages badly. Pick a mood instead.

Which domain extension do game studios use?

.com is still the default, with .io and .dev popular among indie teams. Steam and itch.io links matter more than the extension.

How do I protect a game title?

Register the domain and handles first, then consider a trademark in class 9 and class 41 before launch marketing.

03 — FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about our domain name generator.

Is NamePulsar free?

Yes. Generating names, scoring them and checking availability is free and needs no account. When you register a domain, you do it directly with the registrar.

How accurate is the availability check?

We query DNS and the official RDAP registry data in real time. “Available” means the registry has no record of the domain. “Likely available” means the domain has no DNS records but that registry doesn't offer RDAP to confirm. Premium or reserved names can still cost more at the registrar, so always confirm at checkout.

What is the Pulse score?

A 1–10 brandability estimate based on length, pronounceability, syllable count and spelling pitfalls (digits, awkward consonant clusters, double letters). It helps you compare names; it says nothing about trademarks, so run a trademark search before you commit.

Which domain extensions are supported?

.com, .io, .ai, .co, .app, .dev, .net, .org, .xyz, .me, .eu, .de and .ro. Choose the ones you care about before you generate, or hit “all extensions” on any card.

Do you store my project description or shortlist?

No. Your description is sent to the AI model to generate names and isn't saved by NamePulsar. Your shortlist lives only in your browser; share links simply carry the names in the URL.

What makes a good brandable domain name?

Short (ideally under 10 characters), easy to spell after hearing it once, easy to pronounce, distinctive enough to trademark, and available as a .com or a strong alternative like .io or .ai.
