What makes a good product name

Product names have a different job from company names: they usually live under a parent brand (iPhone under Apple, Model 3 under Tesla, Pages under Notion) and have to be distinct from sibling products while fitting a family. That favours short compounds and real-word twists over fully invented words, and it favours names that still make sense when the product gets a version two. This generator is set to compounds and blends and checks domains in case the product earns its own landing page.

Describe the product, what it replaces and who buys it, and mention the parent brand if there is one so the names can be designed to sit next to it.

Tips that save a rename

  • Check the name against your own product family: it should be distinct from siblings but share a tone.
  • Avoid version numbers or years in the name; they date instantly.
  • If the product is physical, check Amazon and marketplace search; if it is software, check the app stores.
  • A product name rarely needs the .com; a clean .co or .app for the landing page is enough.
Should a product name be descriptive?

More descriptive than a company name, because it has to tell customers what it is next to the other products. A hint of function plus a distinctive word works well.

Does a product need its own domain?

Only if it will be marketed separately. Most products live at brand.com/product; a separate domain is useful for campaigns or when the product may become its own company.

Can a product name be trademarked?

Yes, in the relevant class, as long as it is not merely descriptive. Compound and coined names qualify; "Smart Bottle" does not.

03 — FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about our domain name generator.

Is NamePulsar free?

Yes. Generating names, scoring them and checking availability is free and needs no account. When you register a domain, you do it directly with the registrar.

How accurate is the availability check?

We query DNS and the official RDAP registry data in real time. “Available” means the registry has no record of the domain. “Likely available” means the domain has no DNS records but that registry doesn't offer RDAP to confirm. Premium or reserved names can still cost more at the registrar, so always confirm at checkout.

What is the Pulse score?

A 1–10 brandability estimate based on length, pronounceability, syllable count and spelling pitfalls (digits, awkward consonant clusters, double letters). It helps you compare names; it says nothing about trademarks, so run a trademark search before you commit.

Which domain extensions are supported?

.com, .io, .ai, .co, .app, .dev, .net, .org, .xyz, .me, .eu, .de and .ro. Choose the ones you care about before you generate, or hit “all extensions” on any card.

Do you store my project description or shortlist?

No. Your description is sent to the AI model to generate names and isn't saved by NamePulsar. Your shortlist lives only in your browser; share links simply carry the names in the URL.

What makes a good brandable domain name?

Short (ideally under 10 characters), easy to spell after hearing it once, easy to pronounce, distinctive enough to trademark, and available as a .com or a strong alternative like .io or .ai.
